Mike Schriber's Gun Page

I've been interested in guns for years. I had some exposure as a child and greatly enjoyed the challenge of target shooting. As an adult, I also value a gun for home defense and personal protection. I purchased my first handgun a few years ago and have never looked back. I have three handguns, two rifles, and one shotgun. I go to the range often and also shoot in approved areas within the San Bernadino National Forest. After a great deal of consideration, I joined the NRA in 1999. While I feel the NRA is to rigid and conservative, I also feel that they are the only organization keeping gun control for going off the deep end. Here in California, things are especially bad. I think the NRA should fight only the battles that are really worth fighting. I try to follow gun legislation and call or write when it's needed. Unfortunately, gun control advocates are unable to see the forest because of the trees. Gun control is not going to stop criminals from getting firearms. Face it, the guy (or gal) bent on committing mayhem with a firearm is not going to worry that he's also breaking state and federal firearms laws. The recent trend, especially in California, as been to ban "evil" looking guns. My Armalite M15-A2 is now banned. However, if I took of the pistol grip, the gun would no longer be considered an assault weapon. Same firepower, same magazine capacity, it just doesn't look as scary without the pistol grip. It's not like criminals are rushing out to buy $1000 weapons anyway. Plenty of laws, very little logic. Unfortunately, the enforcement of existing laws is weak at best so new laws aren't going to do much except make politicians feel better. I think it's time people stopped blaming the guns and starting getting the people that use them (or fail to lock them up). Well, that's democracy at work.

My Current Collection:

H&K USP (Universal Self-Loading Pistol) Compact in .45 ACP. This is a very nice medium frame semi-auto that fires both single and double action. This gun has a easy to operate slide mounted safety and decocking lever. It has good 8+1 capacity and shoots like a dream. I've added PT Night Sights tritium low profile combat sights for low light conditions. This is by far my favorite pistol.

Kimber Ultra Carry in .45 ACP. The Kimber is an excellent rendition of the classic Colt 1911 single action semi-auto. It's basically a Colt Officers size frame with a 3" barrel. The frame itself is made of a lightweight aluminum alloy which results in a very low overall weight. This gun has decent 7+1 capacity and shoots very well. I've added an extended slide release and PT Night Sights tritium low profile combat sights to create a very comfortable package.

KelTec P-11 in 9mm. This is a bare bones small frame semi-auto that fires double action only. It has no external safeties but features a long eight pound trigger pull, just like a revolver. It has excellent 10+1 capacity and is very easy to conceal. It's not a target gun but it's reliable and gets the job done.

Smith and Wesson 686P in .357 Magnum. This gun was purchased for my wife who dislikes semi-auto pistols. It's a very nice seven shot revolver with a 2.5" barrel. It has a very smooth trigger action and is really a joy to shoot. I order this gun is stainless steel for long term durability. I've added a Crimson Trace laser grip for training and low light situations.

Uberti Colt Single Action Army (Peacemaker) in .45 Long Colt. This is a very nice replica of the venerable Colt revolver made by Uberti in Italy for Cabela's. It's a plain, unadorned model with a black finish and unpolished brass accents. It's a six shot single action only and fires the powerful .45 Long Colt cartridge. It's very well made and an absolute pleasure to fire. It's feels very different that modern revolvers and it's a refreshing change.

Armalite M15-A2 in .223 Remington. This is my fun gun. It's a mil-spec post-ban AR-15 with a 20" heavy (HBAR) barrel. The M15-A2 features a nice muzzle brake that helps control the already minimal recoil. It's a blast (literally) to shoot and a 30 round magazine can go by very fast. The M15 is very accurate at ranges up to 300 yards and beyond. I have a Leatherwood scope mount and Simmons zoom riflescope for hunting. My M15-A2 has a black stock, grip and handguards. In the unlikely event that the world takes a drastic turn for the worse, my AR-15, many magazines and large amounts of M855 ammunition will certainly be a good thing to have. I've added a Wilderness Tactical sling, Harris bipod and RediMag to create a very versatile weapon.

Remington Wingmaster 870 in 12 gauge Super Magnum. I purchased this shotgun primarily for hunting. I bought the Combo version which includes a 24" vent rib barrel with the RemChoke system, and a 20" rifled deer barrel for slugs. The Super Magnum chambers 12 gauge rounds up to 3.25 inches for plenty of punch. This gun really shoots great and the action is a thing of beauty. I've added a 18.5" home defense barrel, Speed Feed pistol grip synthetic stock (which features a buttstock that holds four 3" rounds) and forend, and a Wilderness Tactical sling.

Mosin Nagant M1944 carbine in 7.62x54R. This is an awesome example of Russian battle rifles. My M1944 was made in Poland after World War II. The basic design dates back to the late 1800's. This five shot bolt action rifle is a simple as it is powerful. The 7.62x54R is a full powered battle round with enormous power. The M1944 has a 20" barrel and features and integral folding cruciform bayonet. These weapons are very inexpensive and are truly a pleasure to own and shoot.
